Abstract:
Fire ants were accidentally brought to the U.S. from South America in the 1930's from shipping ports in Alabama. Because there was no way of controlling the population of the fire ants since they had no natural predators in the U.S., scientists think that they will colonize more than 50 percent of the Earth's land surface. Recently, fire ants have been attacking fence lizards that wander onto their mounds and even far way from them.
Question: Are Northern fence lizards born with the ability to "twitch" in situations of danger or is it a learned trait?
