Habitat: The Northern Fence Lizard is known for basking on rail fences which is how it got its name.They can be found basking on logs, trees, and rocks as well as rusted cars and old buildings.
Populations In New York: There are populations of Northern Fence lizards that live in the Hudson Highlands and they tend to live in rocky areas, surrounded by a mixture of deciduous trees. Populations of these lizards are also found in Staten Island living in sandy areas that have pinewood and oak trees.
In the United States: The Northern Fence lizard can be found living in the southeastern part of the United States.
Role in the Ecosystem: Northern fence lizards are secondary consumers.They consume beetles, spiders, centipedes and some plant matter like cheatgrass and needle grass. Fence lizards are eaten by various snakes, carnivorous birds and mammals. Some of their predators are Prairie King snakes, Blue Racers and Cottonmouths.
