Intraspecific Interactions:
Northern fence lizards are diurnal but will look for shade during the hottest hours of the day. They also hibernate during the winter and do not usually interact until mating season (April to August) when males produce a pheromone to attract females.
Males:
Males are very territorial. They will flash the blue patch on their throat, do head-bobs or pushups to intimidate other males when protecting their breeding areas. They will sometimes fight as well.
Females:
After mating with male lizards, they go their own ways. Female northern fence lizards also leave their young after they lay their eggs.
